eSIM vs public WiFi vs VPN:  A Comparison of Internet Access Methods

Image comparing eSIM, public Wi-Fi, and VPN with icons representing each internet access method.

Some of the commonly used methods to access the internetinclude Mobile Data/eSIM Data plans, Virtual Private Networks (VPN) public Wi-Fi, All three have their own advantages and disadvantages. We will compare the three in way in this blog eSIM vs public WiFi vs VPN from cost, speed, security and convenience dimensions

is eSIM Safe?: eSIMs are generally safe. They offer secure, encrypted connections similar to traditional SIM cards, but reducing the risk of physical tampering and theft. The beauty of Data eSIMs is that they can be remotely managed by carriers or sellers, giving flexibility while maintaining robust security standards for mobile connectivity

Are VPNs Legal?: There is no standard answer to questions whether VPNs are legal or but in  US and most of Europe they are used, for privacy and security. However, some countries, like China and Iran, restrict or ban VPN use. Always check local laws to ensure compliance with regulations regarding VPN usage. Using VPN doesn’t relieve you from the consequences of illegal activity usage.

Is WiFi Secure?: Wi-Fi can be secure if proper measures are taken, including using strong passwords, enabling WPA3 encryption, and keeping firmware updated. But public Wi-Fi poses risks, so using a VPN and avoiding sensitive activities on these networks is recommended. If you use pocket Wifi for your internet access, we have written a blog comparing pocket wifi with eSIM.

eSIM Technology

Advantages

Flexibility: Through eSIM technology users can switch between different mobile network operators without the need of physical SIM cards or sim swapping provided their device supports this technology. This is very useful for frequent international travelers who can switch to local networks at affordable prices.

Security, is eSIM Safe: eSIMs are generally more secure than traditional SIM cards. They are built with the device, reducing the risk of physical theft and physical tampering

Convenience: eSIMs can be activated digitally by scanning QR codes provided by the sellers. Users can download and activate plans instantly without needing to visit a store.

Improved Device Design: No physical SIM slot is required, devices can be designed with more space for other components or to improve durability (e.g., water resistance).

Disadvantages of eSIM

Limited Availability: Not all mobile network operators support eSIM technology, and it is not yet available in all regions. Overall market size cant grow till the time all operators are capable of this technology

Compatibility Issues and unawareness in market: Not all devices are compatible with eSIM technology, especially older models. This implies users have buy devices with the features to take advantage of eSIM technology. We have made a detailed video of  eSIM issues that new issues and possible ways to fix it, you can check the Youtube Channel.

Generally Device is costly: Most of the devices that support eSIM are priced higher than normal smartphones, although it is not because of the eSIM Technology features only

Speed: Depends on lots of factors, you can check our blog for the reasons but it can be slower than WiFi

Virtual Private Network(VPN)

Advantages

Enhanced Security: The job of VPN is to encrypt data, make it difficult for hackers to intercept and decipher the information. This is crucial when using public Wi-Fi networks.

Privacy Protection: VPNs masks the user’s IP address, shielding user’s identity and location from websites, ISPs etc.

Bypass Geo-restrictions: Through VPNs users gain access to content that may be restricted in their geographical location by connecting through servers in different locations/countries.

Disadvantages of VPN

Cost: Good quality VPN services mostly require monthly recurring fee or annual fee , which lots of users are not comfortable with.

Is VPN Legal?  & Complex? Initial setup and configuration of VPNs can be complex for non-technical users. Users should always remember to activate the VPN to maintain security. VPNs are not legal in many countries, so before you use this kind of service make yourself aware of the laws of the land. It has been observed US, Canada, most of Europe are more flexbile compared to rest of the world. VPN is meant to protect your privacy but it doesn’t mean they can be used for illegal and unlawful activities.

Speed: It slows down your internet connection as it needs bandwidth for encryption purposes. With a high-quality VPN the slowness of the internet becomes unnoticed but this doesn’t take away the fact speed will be slower than expected.

Public WiFi

Advantages

Accessibility: Public Wi-Fi networks are nowadays easily available in places such as airports, hotels, cafes, and public transportation hubs. This global availability makes them a convenient option for users who need fast internet access.

Cost-effective: Most public Wi-Fi networks mentioned in above point are free or included as part of another service, like a hotel stay or a café purchase. So it is an economical option for users.

Ease of Use: Connecting to a public Wi-Fi network is mostly very simple. Users usually just select the network and users may or may not be required enter a password.

Speed: Wifi offers greater speeds than most 4G networks provided you have good WiFi signal strength and near to the router.

VPN BENIFITS

Disadvantages of Public WiFi

Security Risks: Public Wi-Fi networks are often insecure, most of these places are one of the main targets for hackers who can intercept data, leading to potential identity theft and data breaches.

Unreliable Performance: The performance of public Wi-Fi can vary greatly, often suffering from slow speeds and connectivity issues due to high user volume and limited bandwidth.

Privacy Concerns: Public Wi-Fi networks can potentially track user activity. Both network providers and malicious actors can monitor which sites users visit and what data they send.

Conclusion

Choosing between eSIM vs public WiFi vs VPN for internet access depends on the specific needs and circumstances of the user.

Public Wi-Fi: Best suited for quick and cost-free access in public places. We recommend less-sensitive works like casual browsing but things like banking or personal identity related  activities should be done with mobile data or using vpn if its legal.

VPN: This is for users for whom security and privacy is critical or extremely important, especially when using public networks. VPNs  allows accessing geo-restricted content but it will come with additional costs.

eSIM:  A must have option for frequent travelers and users who like the flexibility of switching mobile networks without physical SIM cards or accessing important applications when not in a WiFi Zone. It offers a unique mix of security and convenience, though its availability is still growing.
